This 165 square miles of land, made up of eleven parishes, was discovered by the Portuguese in 1536 and colonised by the British in 1627, before it became independent from Britain on 30^th November 1966.

The archetypal idyllic Caribbean island, with its breathtaking scenery and famous sandy beaches offers the visitor an opportunity to experience calm waters for swimming on the West and South Coasts, whilst in contrast, the waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the East Coast are great for surfers.

The West Coast of the island is a popular destination for visitors, with more water sports readily available. Both the West and South Coasts offer a wide variety of restaurants at which to dine. However, the South Coast waters are ideal for windsurfing and the area buzzes with excitement from its many nightclubs.

When in Barbados you can contact the Barbados National Trust to arrange to attend one of the weekly ‘open houses’ that are held from January through to April, where you can view some of the island’s traditional Barbadian homes. Alternatively, you may wish to shop in the island’s capital of Bridgetown or you may prefer to play golf, tennis, jet-ski, scuba dive, take a helicopter ride … the list goes on.
