Like so many other Caribbean islands, Grenada was originally occupied by Carib and Arawak Indians, before the island was sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1498. The island changed hands between the French and the British during the 17^th and 18^th centuries, when it finally gained independence from Britain on 7^th February 1974.

Made up of three islands: itself, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Grenada is the largest of the three, measuring 120 square miles.

Grenada is known as ‘The Isle of Spice’, with more spices per square mile than any other place on the planet. Nutmeg is the country’s biggest export and Grenada produces one third of the world’s supply.

With over 40 white sand beaches, 9 black sand beaches, aquatic life, parks, rainforests and places of cultural and historical interests, Grenada is one of the most scenic and few remaining unspoilt islands in the Caribbean.

Cruise liners, yachts, ferries, cargo and other boats regularly call in at the island’s deep-water harbour.
